decided to implement that wild sheep chase style for the american gods cover. it works, sort of. makes sense in context of the book, too - gods hidden in the design, the title coming out in the shadow of the cover. still going to toy with other ideas. yes, i know it sort of looks like a barbershop… but i wanted to keep the red/white/blue for ‘MURICA.

hint: if it still just looks like lines and lines… lean far away from your screen.

i’ve been getting some new sources of inspiration for the book covers, in particular this one i found, created by graphic designer sigurd mannsaker at http://sigtastic.com/portfolio.html - a wild sheep chase by haruki murakami. see if you can spot the sheep in that pattern… yup, even has the star on it. sick idea and well executed. now to figure out how to apply this to neil gaiman…

here’s one with a funkier font and i added some color and contrast to the photo. this one pops a whole lot more, but i hate how many covers utilize the whole text/block over the eyes deal. i did it here because the book is all about gods from different cultures living as mortals around the world, indiscernable from other human beings. they’ve taken on clever aliases and are losing strength as faith in each god slowly diminishes. thus, we see and treat them as we would anyone else. i can get away with it, yass?

second book cover (just the cover) - neil gaiman’s good omens, a book he did with terry pratchett. it’s about an angel and a demon who have been stationed on earth for six thousand years and pretty much become best friends after thousands of years of rivalry. the point of them being on earth is to deal with the antichrist (the demon to look after the birth/upbringing, the angel to stop it) except… there’s a little mix up at the hospital and the antichrist is lost. the book covers the frantic days before armaggedon with both sides trying to figure out what the hell is going on, where the antichrist is, and what their respective leaders will do once they see that things aren’t going to plan. really funny book. the back gray will act as another spot where i wanna do the shiny see through ink. perhaps.

first round of book covers. haven’t had enough time to think about colors yet, and i’ve only tried six fonts. but i think i’m going to stay with this concept. interworld’s one of those teen books that you read and you’re like ah man this is just awesome and i’m clearly still just a boy who dreams about awesome things like this. basically, this kid joey stumbles upon a parallel universe, which causes all sorts of mayhem - eventually landing him in interworld, the space inbetween all the parallel universes, where every version of him from each universe is gathering together to train for war. inter-dimensional war between magic and science. how effing cool is that?

in any case, that explains the presence of the mustache yet again. the joey copies were either really slight (different personality) to an entirely different race (even a robot joey. a robot joey!) and thus the cover. i kind of want to do one layer as that translucent embossed stuff, forgot what it was called… again. but if i saw this, i’d be like, shit, i wonder what this is all about.

in class, which is going on right now, we’re talking about how my stuff is like saul bass. a lot like saul bass. and gen warned what happens when your work is a little too much like saul bass. on the left hand side is the poster for spike lee’s clockers, which looks quite similar to saul bass’ anatomy of a murder poster created decades beforehand. on the far right is a variant to the poster… i imagine after spike lee got in all that trouble, he had to pull the first one and had this one created in its place.
